"Saturday Lunch"
Date of review: 7 May 2011 - New

This is without doubt Newbury Best Kept secret, a real gem that you all need to uncover, with great food, service as well as a relaxing atmosphere.

We enjoyed a late lunch where nothing was too much trouble, the food was fresh, hot and great tasting, served by staff that where attentive and gave great suggestions for our meal and wine sections, which truly enhanced our whole meal experience

It was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. The whole experience has turned us into Raving Fans!

"Newbury's best keep dining secret"

Until I was gifted a Groupon voucher by a work colleague at the nearby Vodafone HQ I'd never heard of The Coach. I arrived with my partner at about 5pm on Sunday 1st May and was greeted by Stephan and his twin brother who is also the Head Chef. Instinctively, we realised that The Coach is a place we should have first visited months ago when it came under the new management of Stephan and his team. The atmosphere is a calm, nicely relaxed one with ample lounge chairs and a garden in which to enjoy some rather fine looking wines as well as a varied selection of ales. The menu was varied and offered a range to suit all palettes and all wallet sizes.

The range of steaks was particularly impressive and, as a recent convert to red meat, I simply didn't know the differences between the five types on offer. To help me understand these differences Stephan went to the kitchen and brought out, on a wooden slab, cuts of each and explained the essential differences. Now, what other restaurateur in the UK would have taken the trouble to do that? I'd wager none.

My partner and I eat out most weekends so we know a thing or two about what constitutes quality produce, ingredients and cooking. In fact, we write about it quite often! We have no connection whatsoever with The Coach but what we do have is an appreciation of gastronomy. Quite simply, we were blown away by what we experienced on this late Sunday afternoon. If the presentation and explanation of the differing cuts of meat was not enough to impress then we had a surprise in store when it came to the dessert. We are both addicted to apple pie and ice cream but sadly this was not a menu option. However, the sadness soon gave way to feelings of joy when the chef offered to make some for us. Within fifteen minutes we were tucking in to some of the best apple pie we have ever tasted. Talk about rabbits out of a hat.

For a fraction of the cost of eating at any of these so-called "celebrity" restaurants you can have superbly tasting fayre fit for a King & Queen or even a Republican at the Coach where the staff seem to take pride in all that they do. A hearty five cheers to the entire team at The Coach.

"What glorious food & great service"

I had a Groupon voucher purchased in December 2010 and used it last night. My wife & I celebrated our 6 anniversary by going to the Coach, we had a lovely evening, warm friendly staff who are attentive friendly and pitch it just rite. The 3 course meal was devine, we both started with the bubble & squeak which was done to perfection, my wife followed with stake and I the sword fish and again both done beautifully and served very well. Our last course was Strawberry brulee and I had Mango cheese cake with sorbet which again were perfect, I had a voucher which got us this at a very good price, how ever having eaten there and loved it we will go back for a special occasion and pay the full price it is worth it. So thank you to the staff at The Coach for making our anniversary meal/evening a great success thank you.

"Great dining experience at The Coach"

We have been told to visit The Coach by several friends but hadn't managed to get there until today. I am pleased that we booked as it was busy, and quite rightly so. I loved the grazing boards, you could either pick a theme or do as we did and pick items, the calamari and whitebait were fabulous as was the chunky tzatziki and hummus. My husband had an extremely juicy steak burger and I had one of the nicest steaks I have had in a long time. No room for pudding but I noticed others eating what looked like very well presented puds. A definite recommend

I've been to the Coach a few times now. The food there is always very good, and at an exceptionally reasonable price. The service is always to a high standard, and the decour is very nice.

The Coach also has a very nice seating area outside, which also has heaters, so is good all year round.

We only went here because it was on The Times special lunch offer. It was quite busy but the service was fine. The three of us thoroughly enjoyed the food listed on their fixed price menu (pssst ... it was cheaper than The Times offer). Good value, with a range of also fixed price wines.

Although The Coach is apparently part of a small chain, the menu was far more interesting than might have been expected in those circs, and we didn't get the impression that what we had had been prepared earlier.
